A true story from a rice mill and warehouse in Suphan Buri, Thailand
When a handful of insects in one container costs a customer built over ten years — and the lesson about insect control most warehouses still have not learned
A rice mill and warehouse of 12,000 tonnes capacity in Suphan Buri was struck off a major exporter's approved supplier list after live insects were found in a container at the port, costing more than 30 million baht of orders a year. Here is the real cause, and how the AIROFOG AT35 thermal fogger became the missing layer that got the warehouse re-approved.
Teera, 52, runs a rice mill and warehouse of 12,000 tonnes capacity in Si Prachan district, Suphan Buri, a business he inherited from his father. It took him ten years to become an approved supplier to a major exporter shipping to Middle Eastern and African markets.
Last October he took a phone call he says he can still recite word for word. The exporter's procurement team told him that two containers loaded from his warehouse had been found to contain live insects during the pre-shipment inspection at Laem Chabang port.
The consequence did not end with two returned containers. The exporter suspended all orders immediately and advised that his warehouse would be removed from the approved supplier list until he could demonstrate an auditable insect control system. The lost orders were worth over 30 million baht a year.
Teera hired a stored-product pest control auditor to inspect the entire facility. It took three days, and the report showed him he had misunderstood the problem for twenty years — because what he had always done was fumigate the stacks, which handles insects in the product but does nothing about insects in the building.
The auditor showed him that stored-product insects do not live only in the grain. They live in the roof structure, wall cracks, column recesses, under pallets, in spilled grain accumulated in corners, and in the empty sack store — all of them harbourages from which the population re-infests each new stack after every fumigation.
The most serious finding was the bagging and container loading area: an open zone with the heaviest grain spillage on site, and one that had never been treated at all, because fumigation only works in sealed spaces. Insects from that zone entered containers directly at the very last step before export.
The auditor's summary is a line Teera wrote down: fumigation handles what is in the stack, fogging handles what is in the building. Do only one and the system is incomplete, and the problem always comes back.
An agricultural warehouse is several times harder to control than a general one. First is food. A rice warehouse is an enormous food supply for stored-product insects — rice weevils, flour beetles, rice moths and several others. Insects that get in have no reason to leave.
Second is the building. Most warehouses are steel-framed structures full of gaps, joints and recesses — in high roof structures that cleaning never reaches, and in cracked walls. These are safe harbourages and the source of re-infestation into product.
Third is throughput. Goods move in and out constantly, which means large doors opening, trucks coming and going, and product arriving from other sources that may carry insects undetected at intake.
Last is residue. Grain spilled into corners, under conveyors, in floor channels and inside empty sacks is a continuous food source and breeding medium. Even a few kilograms is enough to sustain a population in the building year-round.
The 30 million baht a year of lost orders is the clearest figure, but Teera says the real damage runs several layers deeper. First was handling the two returned containers: return freight, re-fumigation, re-sorting and contractual penalties — roughly 1,200,000 baht.
Second was the rice in those containers, which had to be re-sorted, losing both quality and weight, and was ultimately sold at a lower price domestically. Third was the consultancy and system upgrade costs required to apply for reinstatement.
But the heaviest cost, he says, was time. Ten years building the relationship, lost in a single phone call. Getting back on the list meant a stricter audit than before and at least another full season.
He adds that word travelled through the industry extremely fast, because there are only a handful of major Thai rice exporters and everyone knows everyone. He ended up explaining the same incident to several other customers who had nothing to do with it.
Teera rebuilt the system on the auditor's advice in three layers. The first is building hygiene: daily removal of spillage, sealing wall cracks, cleaning pallets and empty sacks, and separating the sack store from the product store.
The second is fumigating the stacks to standard, which he already did, but now with proper recording and verification, plus pheromone traps for monitoring so the results are a number rather than an impression.
The third — the layer he had never had — is thermal fogging inside the building: the roof structure, walls, column recesses, the sack store, and above all the bagging and loading area, the last point before goods leave the warehouse.

The per-visit cost is high and the contractor comes on his own schedule, while stored-product control has to be systematic and continuous with records an auditor can review. Ad hoc contracting is both more expensive and fails the audit criteria of major buyers.
The principle the auditor showed Teera is that stored-product insect control has two inseparable halves. One is insects in the product, handled by fumigation. The other is insects in the building, which must be handled by fogging.
Fumigate only and the building population re-infests every new stack. Fog only and insects developing inside the grain survive and emerge later. Only doing both makes the system complete and capable of passing a buyer's audit.
