When mosquitoes take your tappers one by one, and every untapped tree is money drying on the bark before dawn
A 180-rai rubber plantation in Trang lost nine tappers in three months. Not over wages, and not over rubber prices, but because mosquito density between one and five in the morning had become more than the crew could work through. He tried having the remaining crew take an extra five rai each. The result was worse tapping quality because they were rushing, more panel damage, and exhausted tappers — two of whom threatened to leave as well. He abandoned the plan.
The more serious and permanent damage was panel injury from bad cuts. A tree with a damaged tapping panel yields less and has a shorter productive tapping life, which is difficult to price but persists for years.
And there was a cost he had never considered: skilled tappers are scarce. Recruiting in an area where young people have moved to the cities takes a long time and produces less skilled hands, which affects both volume and the longevity of the trees.
