Khun Prae is 33 and has run a nail and lash salon in Ekkamai for four years: four manicure stations and two lash beds in 55 square metres, in a shophouse unit with no windows.

The reasons the four gave on leaving were alarmingly similar. Three said they had headaches every afternoon and stinging eyes. One had chronic congestion and a cough that cleared every time she took a long holiday and returned every time she came back to work.
The first three who left gave neutral reasons: moving house, changing career, going back to their home province. Khun Prae thought nothing of it.
But the fourth had been with the salon since opening day and was the person Khun Prae trusted most. She sat down after closing and said plainly that she loved the place but could not take it any more.
