Why disinfecting the kennels daily is not enough, and why ozone is becoming the standard for animal wards
An owner brings a cat in for one illness and takes it home with a second. It is every animal hospital's worst outcome — and it comes from the air in the ward, not from the vet's hands.
Dr Chanikan is 38 and has run a mid-sized animal hospital off Rama 2 Road for seven years: three consulting rooms, a surgery, an X-ray room, and a recovery ward of 12 kennels with separate cat and dog zones.

By the fifth case she started keeping a proper table, and what she found made her sit down. Every affected cat had stayed at least one night in the hospital's ward. Not a single cat that came for a consultation and went home the same day reported symptoms.
Testing confirmed a virus in the feline upper respiratory group — spread mainly by droplets from sneezing and by contact with contaminated surfaces, and able to survive on surfaces for days.
What hurt most was that she had been proud of her hygiene standards for seven years. Every kennel washed and disinfected after each animal, floors mopped three times a day, gloves changed between every case.

Dr Chanikan says the hardest part was not the money. It was reading a message from an owner who had trusted the hospital for five years, saying his cat was now ill because he brought her here.
The consultant pointed her to international veterinary infection control practice, which has three main approaches to airborne risk: raise the ventilation rate, isolate infectious patients, and disinfect the air on a schedule.
Her hospital could do the first two only partially, because the ward has no windows and new ventilation ductwork could not be installed without rebuilding.
The third she could do immediately.
