The primer bulb: a cheap component that can halt disease-control work for a week.
A small rubber part costing under three hundred baht stopped a border municipality fogging for a whole week, during a period of rising dengue reports. This is the story of the component everyone overlooks until it splits.
This municipality covers a border area with permanent communities, a border trade market and seasonal worker accommodation. Mosquito control here is not just sanitation, it is disease surveillance with weekly case reporting.
Its thermal fogger works far harder than average. Some weeks it goes out five consecutive nights, travelling to and from sites on laterite roads that vibrate the machine the entire way.
One Monday evening the officer squeezed the primer bulb to draw fuel into the carburettor as usual, and felt his fingers sink much further than they should, with fuel running over his hand. The bulb had split along its side.
The primer bulb draws fuel from the tank into the carburettor before starting, so the engine has fuel ready to ignite on the first pull.
On a fogging machine with a diaphragm carburettor, the primer bulb is not a luxury. The diaphragm needs engine pressure to draw fuel, so with no fuel in the system to begin with, thirty pulls on the recoil still will not start it.
When the bulb splits, the system draws air instead of fuel, so no amount of squeezing gets fuel into the carburettor, and a machine that is perfect in every other respect becomes a machine that will not start.
The officer tried to seal the split with electrical tape and carry on, an understandable fix, but tape cannot withstand repeated suction and the split widened until the rubber tore away from its fitting within two days.
The municipality contacted a small-engine shop in town, which stocked primer bulbs for brush cutters and knapsack sprayers, but nothing matching this fogging machine model.
They tried a brush cutter bulb of similar size. It fitted, but its displacement was too small, requiring thirty squeezes to draw fuel, and it seeped at the fitting because the hose diameter did not match.
Meanwhile the fogging plan for four villages was postponed, and complaints came in from communities that had already been waiting their turn. What was really lost was not the cost of a part but community confidence.

The third cause was squeezing technique. Squeezing hard and fast stretches the rubber beyond its design limit repeatedly. The correct method is slow, even squeezes until you feel the system fill, then stop, not rapid pumping until the engine fires.
We fitted a correct-model primer bulb with new fittings and a complete fuel line set, because the line attached to the old bulb was also hard with early cracking. Replacing only the bulb would mean a leaking line the following month.
We replaced the in-tank fuel filter too, because a clogged filter forces harder squeezing, which is another factor accelerating rubber failure.
We cleaned the carburettor and inspected the diaphragms, which had also begun to harden from old fuel, so those were replaced as a set with gaskets.
Finally we handed the machine back with three recommendations that cost nothing at all: mix only a week's fuel at a time, cover the machine when transporting it in sun, and squeeze the primer slowly and evenly.

Before each session, squeeze the primer bulb slowly three or four times and watch two things: the rubber must return fully to shape every time, and no fuel should seep at the surface or the fittings.
Look for fine crazing on the rubber surface. A bulb that has begun to craze is close to the end of its life and should be replaced before an important job, not left to split in the field.
Squeeze the fuel line gently. A good line is soft and springs back. A line that is too hard to compress, or that shows a white mark where you pressed, should be replaced.
Check the in-tank fuel filter monthly. If sediment has discoloured it, replace it. It costs very little and significantly extends the life of the primer bulb and diaphragms.
