In a truck garage, petrol has been the universal cleaner for thirty years. A thermal fogger is one of the few things it must never touch, and that lesson cost nearly twenty thousand baht.

This truck garage occupies over three rai with a parts warehouse, a truck yard and mechanics quarters on the same site. Mosquito pressure is severe because a large stock of used tyres holds standing water beautifully.

The owner bought his own thermal fogger two years ago, because monthly pest-control contracts cost more and were not flexible enough for a site that needs frequent treatment.

In a truck garage the cleaning culture is petrol and compressed air. Anything oily or dirty gets washed in petrol and blown dry. That has worked on metal parts for thirty years, and that is the problem.

The day the mechanic decided on a proper clean

After two years with almost no cleaning, the garage fogger had solution residue on the outside and its fog had become inconsistent. The senior mechanic decided to do a thorough clean one Saturday.

He disassembled it systematically and carefully, which was entirely correct. The problem came next, when he dropped every part into a tray of petrol exactly as he does with vehicle components.

What went into that tray included metal, plastic and rubber: carburettor diaphragms, solution valve seals, the tank O-ring, the solution hose and the tank cap gasket.

The metal parts came out gleaming and satisfying. The rubber parts also looked clean at that moment, which is why nobody thought twice about it that day.

Rubber that looked fine on Saturday and swelled by Monday

Different rubbers are formulated for different liquids. Rubber in a fuel system tolerates petrol; rubber in a solution delivery system is formulated for chemical solutions, not hydrocarbon solvents.

When the wrong rubber contacts petrol, solvent molecules penetrate its structure and it swells. That process is not instant, it takes hours to days.

Saturday it reassembled normally. Sunday a short test run showed solution weeping at a joint. Monday, in real use, solution ran from three joints at once and the engine died on throttle release.

Swollen rubber never returns to its original size, even after drying. Its internal structure has changed. Waiting for it to dry out and shrink back is a misconception that leads many people to keep using the machine until the damage is far worse.

Damage that spread because they kept using it

The mechanic tried tightening the joints, which is a sensible response to a loose seal. On a swollen seal, tightening crushes the rubber until it tears, permanent damage.

Leaking solution ran onto the wiring and coil assembly, degrading the insulation and producing a small current leak, which is a more serious safety issue than most people assume.

Swollen carburettor diaphragms caused stalling on throttle release and poor throttle response, so the mechanic richened the mixture screw to compensate, adding a layer of carbon in the resonator on top of everything else.

Within ten days, a problem that started with five rubber parts had become a complete rubber replacement plus wiring repair, fuel-system cleaning and carbon removal from the exhaust path.

What we found when we inspected the machine

When it reached us, the thing that told the whole story was the size of the rubber parts. The tank O-ring, which should sit snugly in its groove, was visibly too large to go back in at all.

Both diaphragms were swollen and soft, with stretched, distorted edges. Placed next to a new diaphragm the difference was obvious without any measuring instrument.

The solution hose had swollen along its length and its inner wall had begun to delaminate, more dangerous than it looks, because loose rubber fragments travel on to block the nozzle later.

The wiring where solution had leaked had hard, crazed insulation. It needed full replacement, because taping over it just hides the problem until the next rainy season.

Permanently swollen rubber that will not seal

Hydrocarbon solvent penetrates rubber that was never formulated for it, causing swelling that never reverses. A swollen seal leaks no matter how tightly it is done up.

Distorted diaphragms causing stalling

A swollen, soft diaphragm draws fuel inconsistently, causing stalling on throttle release, poor throttle response and hard starting.

Delaminating hoses that block the nozzle

The inner wall of a swollen hose begins to shed fragments that travel on and block the nozzle, creating a hard-to-diagnose fault later.

Why the usual fixes do not work

Tighten the joints further

Effective on a loose seal; on a swollen one it crushes and tears the rubber, guaranteeing replacement instead of a simple swap of the affected parts.

Let it dry and wait for the rubber to shrink back

Solvent-swollen rubber never returns to its original condition. The internal structure has changed. Waiting wastes time and adds damage.

Wrap the joints with sealing tape

It stops the drip temporarily but does nothing about a distorted seal, and usually destabilises system pressure enough to create a new and harder fault.

Replace only the part that leaks

Use whatever rubber the workshop has

O-rings and hoses in a garage are usually rated for engine or hydraulic oil, not chemical solutions. Wrong-grade rubber brings the same problem back faster.

Why the whole rubber set is replaced, in the correct grades

When every rubber part contacts solvent at the same time, they all degrade at a similar rate. Replacing today's leaking part means the next one leaks in a few days.

Cleaning a thermal fogger correctly, what goes with what

The exterior housing, frame and handles can be wiped safely with a cloth and mild soapy water. Never use a high-pressure washer on the machine, water gets into the electrics and the cooling vents.

The solution tank and fog tube are cleaned with clean water by running the machine to flush after every use. That is both the safest method and the best prevention against deposits.

Metal fuel-system components such as the carburettor body can be cleaned with proper carburettor cleaner, but the rubber and diaphragms must always be removed first. Never soak them together.

Rubber, seals, O-rings, diaphragms and hoses must never be soaked in any solvent, petrol, thinner or carburettor cleaner included. Wipe them with a dry cloth or one dampened with clean water only.

Signs the rubber in your machine is degrading

The first sign is solution weeping at a joint after use. Even a small damp patch deserves immediate inspection, because a seal that has started to leak never recovers and usually worsens within weeks.

The second is stalling on throttle release or poor throttle response, usually from a hardened or swollen diaphragm, a symptom many people misdiagnose as a blocked carburettor.

The third is rubber that feels tacky, unusually soft, or shows crazing when flexed. Healthy rubber is elastic and springs back immediately. If a pressed mark stays, it is time to replace it.

As a general rule, diaphragms and seals should be replaced at the manufacturer interval, or at least annually for heavily used machines. A scheduled replacement costing hundreds to a few thousand baht consistently prevents a repair costing tens of thousands.
