Mixing above specification: why stronger solution actually works less well.
High season was coming, the garden still had mosquitoes, so the manager told staff to mix the solution twice as strong for faster results. Three weeks later the hotel had a one-star review about the smell and a fogger too gummed up to use.
This boutique hotel has 24 rooms, a garden that is its main selling point, a pool and a semi-outdoor restaurant where guests eat dinner almost every night. Mosquitoes here are not just a hygiene matter, they are a review matter.
Late October is both the peak mosquito period and the run-up to high season, so the manager responsible for maintenance wanted visible results within a single week.
His reasoning was straightforward and exactly the reasoning we meet in a great many customers: if solution at normal strength kills a certain number of mosquitoes, doubling the strength should double the effect. That is not true in any respect.
The night after the first double-strength application, mosquitoes in the garden were noticeably fewer. The manager concluded he had been right and told staff to keep using that mix every time.
What he did not realise is that the first night's result came from fogging at all, not from the concentration. Active ingredient beyond the required dose does not kill more mosquitoes. The ones that contact the aerosol were already dying at standard strength.
The excess did not disappear. It settled on the ground, on leaves, on the outdoor furniture, and most importantly it stayed inside the machine's nozzle and fog tube.
In that first week nobody noticed anything, because the residue was still thin and the odour had not accumulated. That is exactly when everyone's misunderstanding got confirmed as fact.
Normally the odour after fogging fades within two to three hours. At double strength, the residue left on surfaces was correspondingly greater, and the smell was still there the next morning.
Guests at breakfast in the garden began asking staff what had been sprayed. Two rooms requested a move because the odour drifted onto their balconies, and one review specifically mentioned a chemical smell.
Housekeeping reported a thin sticky film on the rattan garden furniture and staining on the canvas seat cushions that would not wash out, damage nobody anticipated when the decision to increase concentration was made.
The pool needed chemical rebalancing more often because of aerosol settling on the water surface, which was another unplanned cost.
By week three staff reported that output had become erratic, dense fog at times, almost nothing at others, with the machine needing to be shaken periodically during a pass.
With the machine stopped, inspection of the fog tube outlet showed a sticky pale-brown deposit around the opening. Staff tried to wipe it away, but it was harder than expected and firmly bonded to the metal.
Someone suggested pushing a thin wire into the nozzle orifice, the most commonly given and most damaging advice there is, because it permanently deforms the orifice edge and changes droplet size for good.
Fortunately the manager stopped and called us instead, so the machine was recoverable without replacing the entire nozzle assembly.
With the nozzle assembly removed, we found a gum-like deposit in the solution passage and around the orifice, formed by carriers and binders present in quantities beyond what could evaporate with the solvent.
The fog tube carried a deposit layer much thicker than a typical case, with places where it had flaked, which explains the erratic output perfectly, as those flakes intermittently obstructed the outlet.
The rubber seals in the solution metering valve had swollen and softened, having been exposed to a concentration the material was never designed to tolerate, so flow rate was no longer stable even at an unchanged setting.
Notably, the engine was in perfect condition: normal compression, clean fuel system. All the damage was in the solution delivery system, which was very good news for the bill.
Excess carriers and binders do not fully evaporate, drying into gum around the orifice. Droplets come out larger and the spray pattern becomes uneven.
Thick deposits break into flakes that intermittently obstruct the outlet, producing fog output that is inconsistent and unpredictable.
