The mistake took less than thirty seconds. It happened in the dark, to an officer who had been doing this job for five years, and it cost the municipality a complete fogging machine in a single night.

This municipality fogs on a weekly disease-control schedule through the rainy season, starting around six in the evening to match the period when Aedes mosquitoes are active and residents are home.

The officer responsible has done this work for five years. He knows every lane, knows which houses have a case history, and had never damaged a machine before. This is not a story about someone who does not know the job.

That night the work started late because of an evening downpour. By the time the rain stopped it was nearly half past seven and completely dark. He filled the machine using a torch held in his mouth, in an unlit parking area.

Two tanks that look identical in the dark

A shoulder-carried thermal fogger has two tanks: fuel and solution. On many models they are similar in size, have similar caps, and sit less than a hand's width apart.

In daylight nobody fills the wrong one, because you can see which cap is which. In the dark with a single torch, a hand working from habit opens whichever cap is nearest.

That night he opened the fuel cap and poured in roughly half a litre of water-based chemical solution before the smell registered as wrong. He stopped immediately, but half a litre was already far more than enough.

What he did next is what most people do: he tipped out as much as he could and poured fresh fuel on top, hoping to dilute it. That is where the damage went from small to large.

Ten minutes with the engine running

The machine started and ran for about ten minutes, which was the most expensive ten minutes of the night, because the pump drew that contaminated mixture through the entire fuel system.

Most fogging solutions are either water-based or oil-based. Neither is designed to burn in a combustion chamber, and water-based formulations are mostly water.

The carburettor held water in the float chamber and both diaphragms had swollen and distorted. That rubber tolerates petrol, but not the solvents present in some solution formulations.

The spark plug was wet with white deposits at the insulator tip, and the resonator interior showed the beginnings of corrosion from the steam that passed through during those ten minutes.

The damage, part by part

Water in the fuel system prevents combustion

Water does not burn and does not mix with petrol. It settles at the bottom of the tank and is drawn in intermittently, causing stumbling, stalling and no-starts even after fresh fuel is added on top.

Diaphragms and rubber seals swollen out of shape

Carburettor rubber tolerates petrol, but surfactants and solvents in fogging chemicals make it swell, soften and lose its shape permanently, which means replacement, not cleaning.

Fuel filter and lines degraded

Filter media and fuel line swell or harden on contact with fogging chemicals and never return to their original condition, even after flushing. They must be replaced.

Corrosion starting in the exhaust path

Steam passing through the combustion chamber while the engine ran leaves moisture in the resonator. Left untreated, that corrosion spreads and eventually perforates the tube.

Why the usual fixes do not work

Pour fresh fuel on top to dilute it

Water does not mix with petrol, so nothing is diluted. It simply increases the volume of contaminated liquid and spreads it through the system faster.

Keep pulling until it starts

Preventing wrong-tank filling, things you can do today

The most effective method is to make the two caps different by touch, not by sight, because fogging mostly happens in the dark. Wrap coloured tape around the fuel cap or fit a raised rubber marker the hand recognises immediately.

Write FUEL and SOLUTION in reflective paint on the tanks, large enough to read by torchlight, and repeat the same labels on the storage containers so both ends match.
